Mr.
Bernie is one of the original Heart House Austin volunteers.
After reading about Heart House in the Austin Chronicle, he
attended a volunteer orientation on August 24 and has worked at least 3
hours per week since then. Bernie,
who is originally from
Carbondale,
Illinois, has worked as a Research Engineer at TICOM for about 4 ˝ years.
When
he isn’t volunteering Bernie enjoys playing guitar, windsurfing, and
mountain biking.
Bernie
decided to volunteer partially because he remembers being mentored by a
volunteer who helped children get amateur radio licenses.
This volunteer had a very positive impact on Bernie’s life. Bernie
tutors during Homework Hour and is very good at working with students who
need one-on-one attention. He helps
these kids understand academic concepts that they are having trouble with.
Bernie has definitely made a difference in the lives of these
children that need extra help.
Bernie
is always very flexible with his time which has been a tremendous help for
us during the initial start-up of Heart House Austin.
Bernie’s patience also make him a huge asset to our organization.
When asked about Bernie, Site Director Diane Cannon commented, “He’s
one of the most patient and concerned volunteers we have.
He has a very calming effect over the children.”
Heart
House staff wants to give huge THANK YOU to Mr. Bernie, Volunteer of the
